它碧水常绿、深不可测，是天然的泊船良港。潭边老寨山上有中日友好亭、滨江亭、白庙阁遗址，遗址旁有巨石，称“乌龟石”。山上茂树参天与碧潭绿洲、田园村舍遥相辉映，处处是美丽的景色，这里是漓江风光荟萃之地，素有“果然佳胜在兴坪”之说，是漓江的精华所在，它始建于三国吴甘露元年265年，当时称为熙平县。县治迁走后，以熙平偕音，改名为兴坪。镇口有一古榕，枝叶繁茂，浓荫如盖，传为隋开皇年间所植，每年它为兴坪镇迎送着数以万计的旅客。
兴坪的奇山异水，先后还留下了周恩来、邓颖超、陈毅、叶剑英、邓小平、杨尚昆、江泽民、李鹏、乔石等党和国家领导人的足迹。著名国画大师徐悲鸿先生到此写生时称赞“阳朔美景在兴坪”。艺术大师徐悲鸿的杰作《漓江烟雨》就取材于此，1963年春叶剑英元帅畅游兴坪后，高度概括了兴坪，有诗为证：
春风漓水客舟轻，夹岸奇峰列送迎。
马跃画山人睇镜，果然佳胜在兴坪。
